Adobe Creative Suite.jpg
09/20/2011
UC Berkeley and Adobe are pleased to announce a pilot agreement to provide Adobe software to all campus students, faculty, and staff at no cost to individuals or departments for the 2011–12 fiscal year. Students are able to download the Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium edition (shown here), while faculty and staff can download the full Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection. Both suites include Acrobat X Pro. This agreement is part of the Operational Excellence-sponsored Productivity Suite (PS) project, which advances the OE goal of reducing complexity by alleviating the departmental administrative burden of researching, purchasing, updating, and distributing licenses for the most commonly used software and tools. To find out how you can download the software, visit the Adobe Campuswide Software License page here. For more details about the agreement, see the iNews article "Adobe Creative Suite software available to campus," available here

Green Means Go...To The Lawrence Hall of Science

LHS Logo.jpg
04/05/2011
The Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) has a new logo! Based on the octagonal shape of their iconic building, the logo evokes a myriad of elements -- children playing, celestial bodies, molecular structures, as well as geometric patterns. The dynamic shape and green color are sure to inspire kids and adults alike to have fun doing science.

The new logo isn't all that’s green -- the Hall is a leading developer of science curriculum for use in schools and out-of-school programs. This spring, the Hall is rolling out green science kits for its AfterSchool KidzScience program. Also this spring, visitors to the Hall can build and test a model solar house in the Ingenuity Lab, see how deep-ocean creatures survive under extreme conditions at the Creatures of the Abyss exhibit, experience a planetarium show on how Nasa's Kepler mission is discovering strange planets, or sign up for a summer camp.

Even the youngest visitors will get a chance to be a scientist for the day as they make observations, ask questions, and test their ideas. Learn more about current exhibits and activities at lawrencehallofscience.org/spring, visit our store to get some great new Hall gear, and join in the Hall's Cal Day festivities on Saturday, April 16, 2011.

Making a Difference @ Cal brings top ranking!

washmonthly magazine image.jpg
09/09/2009
UC Berkeley has been recognized as the top university in the country for its contributions to society as measured by Washington Monthly's annual college guide and rankings.

"Unlike U.S. News and World Report and similar guides, this one asks not what colleges can do for you, but what colleges are doing for the country," say the magazine's editors. "Every year we lavish billions of tax dollars and other public benefits on institutions of higher learning. This guide asks: Are we getting the most for our money?"

When it comes to UC Berkeley, and the University of California in general, the answer appears to be a resounding "Yes." Berkeley was ranked first among 258 national universities. UC San Diego ranked second and UCLA third, followed by Stanford (4), the only private institution in the top 10. UC Davis was ranked tenth, followed by Harvard (11) and MIT (12). UC Riverside (16) and UC Santa Barbara (21) put six UC schools in the top 25.  http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2009/09/03_washmonthly.shtml
